What Is Sugaring? A Beginner’s Guide

Waxing studios and laser hair removal clinics are a dime a dozen, but there’s an underrated epilation method out there you may not be familiar with that offers long-lasting results with virtually no side effects. Of all the hair removal techniques available, sugaring is our favorite. So, what is sugaring, and what sets it apart from other methods? Join us as we explore the benefits of sugaring and what you can expect from treatment!

What is sugaring, and how does it work?

Sugaring is an ancient hair removal method that uses a simple sugar paste to eliminate unwanted hair from the face and body. This natural technique is a gentle alternative to waxing, leaving skin silky-smooth for weeks at a time.

What ingredients does sugaring use?

Most sugar paste solutions contain only three ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, and water, making them safe and effective for all skin types.

Is sugaring safe for sensitive skin?

Absolutely! In fact, sugaring is the best hair removal method for sensitive skin. Sugar paste contains all-natural ingredients and is applied at room or body temperature, so clients with sensitive skin can achieve smooth, touchable skin without the irritation often caused by hot wax. It doesn’t adhere to live skin cells, only hair and dead, flaky skin cells, which further enhances comfort during intimate sugaring sessions.

What happens during a sugaring appointment?

Your appointment will begin with a gentle cleansing and a light dusting of powder to absorb excess moisture on your skin. Then, your treatment specialist will apply the paste against the natural direction of hair growth and use a quick, flicking motion to remove it, along with unwanted hair, in the direction of growth. They will repeat this process throughout the treatment area until every strand has been eliminated.

Benefits of sugaring

Ready to explore the perks of sugaring? Here are a few benefits to look forward to:

Gently exfoliates the skin

Sugaring is a gentle, non-abrasive exfoliation method that removes dead skin cells, which can clog pores and congest the skin. Many notice smoother skin after the first treatment, and a major improvement in skin texture after sticking with a regular sugaring schedule for a while.

Reduces the risk of ingrown hairs

Like waxing, sugaring removes hair from the root, so each strand must regenerate from the follicle. These fresh baby strands are thinner and finer than shaved hairs and feature a naturally tapered shape for effortless emergence through the skin. In turn, there’s a smaller risk of ingrown hairs.

Less painful than waxing

Thanks to the specific application method, soothing ingredients, and low heat, many people find sugaring substantially more comfortable than waxing, especially for sensitive treatments like bikini and Brazilian sugaring.

Long-lasting results

The results from sugaring can last up to six weeks, especially once you’ve established a consistent hair removal schedule. You may also find that hair grows back thinner and finer.

All-natural ingredients

Hot or warm wax may contain irritating synthetic ingredients and additives that can amplify your pain level and cause adverse reactions, especially in sensitive spots like the bikini area. This isn’t the case with sugaring.

How to prepare for your first sugaring appointment

Sold on sugaring as the ultimate hair removal method? We are, too! Here’s how to prepare your skin for optimal results:

Exfoliate the treatment area

About 24 to 48 hours before your appointment, gently exfoliate the area using a textured glove or dry brush. Avoid harsh chemical exfoliants and abrasive scrubs, as they can damage skin and make your treatment more uncomfortable.

Make sure hair is long enough

Much like waxing, sugaring requires you to grow your hair to at least one-quarter of an inch long to ensure efficient hair removal and minimize discomfort. Sugar paste may not be able to grasp hairs that are too short, while longer strands can cause painful pulling and tugging, increasing the risk of breakage.

Avoid sun exposure

In the weeks before your session, avoid spending extended time in the sun. Wear protective clothing and broad-spectrum sunscreen anytime you head outdoors.

Wear comfortable clothing

Friction is not your friend after sugaring, so it’s best to wear loose, breathable clothing that encourages air flow. Opt for cotton fabrics and roomy fits on the day of your session.

Take an OTC pain reliever

Still concerned about discomfort? You can take an ibuprofen or acetaminophen about 30 minutes before your appointment time to minimize pain during your session.
